Small Speaker Okay Sound Travels Well August 4, 2008

The Nokia MD-3 looked small to me when I got the box. But it was heavy enough that I knew I had something that was meant to move some air.

First Impressions
The box it came in was typical of many Nokia accessories I've purchased: thin paperboard construction with a tray inside holding the items. In addition to the speaker unit there were two adapters, a multi-volt AC charger, batteries, a user guide and a warranty pamphlet.

Setup
Setting up the speaker is very straight-forward. My Nokia 6290 had the female receptacle for the male jack on the speaker wire. I put the batteries into the battery compartment, plugged the lead into my handset, pushed the on/off button on the speaker, adjusted the volume on the speaker and when I hit play on the handset I was listening to music.

Listening
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the sound. I rip music to my phone at a fairly high bit rate because I use a decent set of headphones for listening. This paid off with the MD-3. The sound was a lot better than many portable CD boom boxes I've heard. The maximum sound level is not going to approach any boom box. This is designed for private listening without using a headphone. It will fill your cubicle or work nicely on your bedside table. It's perfect for a motel room.

Portability
I mentioned earlier that the MD-3 traveled well. I was able to pack into my suitcase. It takes up about as much space as a size 12 (US) shoe. It is very rugged and survived the handling through several airports.

Overall this is a well designed and well manufactured unit. It has no serious flaws. It has several nice touches such as a glowing jewel to let you know it is on, it runs from either AC or batteries, it comes with Pop-Port and 3.5mm adapters so you can use it with Nokia's proprietary audio set-up on their phones or hook it up to your MP3 player. I'm happy with it.
